I think Tom Cruise gets a bad rap. I don't care who he prays to, but I do like his performances. In Knight and Day, he does display a manic personality a la Jerry Maquire and I like that sort of Nicholas Cage-like behavior. I do prefer his performances of Les Grossman (in Tropic Thunder) and Frank Mackey (in Magnolia). But back to Knight and Day. The film is pretty cheesey; a combination of Mission Impossible and the silliness of True Lies. I can deal with that, but I can't deal with Cameron Diaz. Why is she in so many movies? Most of the time she portrays a ditsy blond, which may have been right for this film, but she's still annoying. Whenever I think of her, I remember her in Gangs of New York and just cringe. There's some things to like in Knight and Day, like the FX and car chases, but the rest is pretty forgettable.
2.5 out of 5 for Tom Cruise and director James Mangold.
